Concept of Visit to Japan
Let’s Go “Off the Beaten Track,” in Japan. A cultural project of the Cultural News.
- Explain rationale for presenting the articles. Tokyo and Kyoto are too tourist-oriented.
- Less focus on the “hidden” treasures of Japan, which means they are less visited.
- CN is dedicated to providing insights into the traditional culture of Japan by highlighting localities, historical museums, galleries and other items or sights of interest.
Sites listing and selection.
- List as many sites as possible (less-visited museums, galleries, institutions) throughout Japan.
- Select the number of sites that is possible to highlight in the CN, over a period of time.
- Include map with suggested sites.
My (HL) choices, based on my familiarity with these locations:
- Mito, Ibaraki. Kairakuen garden. One of the three great gardens of Japan. Tokugawa Museum
- Kashima, Ibaraki, Jingu, Shiroyama park
- Nikko – Tochigi, Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Kegon Falls
- Yonezawa, Yamagata. Uesugi Jinja. Park and shrine in honor of Uesugi Yozan. Known as: The Lincoln of Japan.
- Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima. Castle, Samurai training, Byakkotai.
- Tsuchiura, Ibaraki. Lake Kasumigaura, Kanonji, Fireworks events
Choose for relevance in these regards:
- Historical significance. Mito: Tokugawa connection.
- Generally unknown but holding promise of helpful insight about Japan.
- Local museum. Accessible provided arrangements are made.
- Interesting sites, artifacts, events.
- Accessible by transportation – trains, taxis, buses.
- Local accommodations.
- Recommendations for an excellent visit. Appropriate clothing (seasonal), food, water, maps,
- Schedules for transportation,

- One central photo or image to be the focus of the article.
- Criteria for recommending a visit to this site.
- Historical significance.
- Local monuments
- Artifacts-symbolism.
- Preparations for visit.
- A day-trip beginning with travel, timeline, schedule and duration of the visit and what to bring what to be careful of, etc.
